Throughout the world, there are many different traditions associated with Christmas. Las Posadas is celebrated throughout Latin America. "Posada" is Spanish for "inn." Over the course of nine nights, local groups reenact the Holy Family's search for lodging in Bethlehem. Children dress as Mary and Joseph, angels, shepherds, and Wise Men. They go from home to home singing Christmas carols throughout the neighborhood. After several "rejections," the final home welcomes the group for a party. Las Posadas is a social event, a family gathering, and a moral lesson. Las Posadas reminds participants of the importance of hospitality and welcome to those in need. |
