Pastoral Council

Pastoral Council at St. Alphonsus Parish

The Parish Pastoral Council discerns the mission of the parish and envisions ways in which the parish membership is being called by God to carry out that mission. The Pastoral Council serves as a consultative leadership body to the pastor. The pastoral visioning and planning function of the council and the day-to-day administrative operations of the parish are two separate and distinct areas of responsibility. The pastor and parish staff is responsible for routine decision-making which needs to take place for the parish to function efficiently and effectively on a daily basis. These day-to-day operational decisions are not the responsibility of the Pastoral Council, whose role is to guide the community in the discernment, expression and fulfilment of its pastoral mission. This is accomplished through an on-going cyclical process of Pastoral Planning, which is mission-motivated and involves: discernment, consensus, goal setting, developing objectives, implementation and evaluation.

One of the elements of this model of pastoral council is a discernment process that takes place each year. Instead of an annual Parish Council election, nominations of parishioners that you feel would be good leaders for our parish are put forth.

The Parish Pastoral Council meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Parish Office.  Parishioners are welcome to attend a council meeting or contact a council member if you wish to include an item on the agenda.  You may contact the council by email at pastoralcouncil@mystals.org  or telephone a specific member directly.  Pastoral Council minutes are available for review.

Financial Council

The Parish Finance Council is a consultative leadership board, which makes recommendations to the Pastor to aid him in the administration of the parish goods (all parish financial resources, buildings, and grounds) through approving and monitoring the annual budget and other long-range financial planning.  Members of the Finance Council must be active and participating parishioners that have some type of financial expertise.  Recommendations for new members may be submitted by any existing council members.  Upon approval and appointment by the Pastor, new council members shall serve a three year term.

Board of Trustees

What is the role of a Parish Trustee?  There are two Trustees in each of the separately incorporated 220 parishes of the Archdiocese.  Trustees are volunteer laypersons appointed by the Pastor and approved by the Archbishop.  They hold the positions of Treasurer and Secretary of the Parish Corporation, and together with the Archbishop, Vicar General, and Pastor, serve as members of the Board of Directors.  As members of the Board, the Trustees help the Pastor ensure proper governance and protect the assets and fiscal stability of the parish.  The Trustees serves in adopting or amending By-Laws, authorizing contracts, indebtedness and large purchases, and consulting with Parish Committees, such as Parish Council and Finance Council.  Trustees are not members of these committees, but may attend any meeting they feel they need to keep informed.

Although the official term of the Trustee is two years, the term can be extended by the Pastor.
